FAQ: “Do you REALLY sail or do you just motor around?”

At Sail Blue Hawaii we SAIL. Due to harbour rules, we cannot hoist sail within the marina but, once we are clear of the # 1 buoy at the top of the channel, the sails go up. With Sail Blue Hawaii, unlike other companies, we HOIST SAIL at the BEGINNING of your charter; the engine is turned off until we need it again at the end of your charter!!

YES, WE SAIL THE ENTIRE CHARTER!!

Even if this is your first time sailing, Capt. Gaelyn customises your sail to your wants and needs. In other words, you can be given a gentle sail or, for those with more experience, an exciting full-sail “heel on” adventure; this is monohull sailing at its best!. All choices take advantage of the consistent and refreshing trade winds that sweep across the Hawaiian Islands.

FAQ: When can we sail?

Delight in pure trade wind sailing any time of day for as many hours as you want. Our islands are almost consistently graced with trade winds so any time is a good time to go sailing…✨✨✨magical SUNRISE cruise, full-sail morning and afternoon, romantic/ peaceful SUNSET cruise.✨✨✨ It is all good.

these keiki and mom know how to hang loose!

Whether your family members are seasoned (monohull) sailors or those who want to experience the thrill of sailing for the first time, a Hawaii day-sail is an excellent way to connect with our ocean, embrace the trade winds, and create lasting memories of your time in paradise.

Kiss the tour bus goodbye. This is the ride and experience of your lives. Two + hours of pure exhilaration with the wind and waves off Waikiki as your engine.

Hawaii Ash Scattering turns to Whale Watching

May 21, 2025 was a beautiful day on the water to celebrate a life and scatter the ashes. It’s never easy, but when ocean conditions lie down flat or the wind ramps up , it is often a reflection of the character of the soul we are scattering. No kidding, this happens often.

May 21, 2025. I mention the date again because Hawaii whale season ends late March /early April. Sailing slowly back to the harbour in a reflective mood we were suddenly stirred by the sight of a mum and calf surfacing as they swam west. WOW!

You never know what your Private Sailing Charter will capture

Every day is different. In my many, many sea hours I am still captured and delighted by the many unusual happenings as I sail each Hawaii private charter. I had someone ask me the other day, “don’t you get bored doing the same thing every day”? I was speechless. Never, ever, NO. Every day is different and you really can’t beat sailing out to scatter ashes and meeting a mum and calf on the way home, in MAY. That is a first for me. Just exactly who was this person we had just said “aloha” to anyway ?

For Sail Blue Hawaii, the horizon is no limit. Choose your own particular type of Hawaii private sailing charter. The choices are endless. (Use the link below to peruse). Your custom adventure on our beautiful Pacific may well be the highlight of your Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii vacation.

Highlight of our Hawaii vacation

I’ve heard that a lot. I heard it again this week:

Thank you, Capt. Gaelyn.  It was indeed a great experience for all of us.   Certainly, the highlight of our trip to Oahu…..- guests from LA and Germany

Such a simple statement but it means the world to me. All the hard work to keep the boat sparkling clean: the wax waxed, the stainless stainless, the rig safe, the sails solid, the hull clean; on it goes. Few people know what to takes to make a boat the “best-kept charter boat in the islands.” All that hard work and all it takes is that simple statement to know it is all worth it. Your joy becomes my joy.

Kaikiwi is upper right..sailing south (to Tahiti, we wish LOL)

The Best Day-Sail !

The photo’s story: My LA client was going to hike Diamond Head after his charter. I said “look for me”. He did… and… he found me. From the top of Diamond Head with his best lens: there is Kaikiwi, full sail. In the original photo, the zoom-in capacity is brilliant. The hazey grey in the photo is the vog coming from the Big Island’s volcanic activity.

Scattering Ashes at Sea in Hawaii

If you are open to it, you can feel the healing power of Hawaii the minute you land. The floral smells, the sounds of waves lapping on the shore, the stunning scenery, the deep azure blue of the Pacific Ocean, the sunrise, the sunset…all the senses created will cradle you as you scatter your loved one at sea in Hawaii. The magic is always there. You just have to tap into it.

Life Celebration at Sea in Hawaii.

There are many stories to be told as you scatter ashes and celebrate your loved one’s life. Perhaps I should publish one, of all the many I have heard, once a week?

‘Aumakua

In Hawaiian mythology, an ʻaumakua is a family or personal god that is a deified ancestor. ʻAumakua are believed to protect and guide their families.

ʻAumakua comes from the Hawaiian words au, meaning “period of time” or “era,” and makua, meaning “parent,” “parent generation” or “ancestor.” ‘Aumakua are beings of both a heavenly and an earthly nature. They are here to help, inspire, guide and communicate with family members.

Why do I mention ‘Aumakua?

Because a small group chartered the boat to scatter ashes and celebrate Ron’s life. Ron’s ‘aumakua (“spirit animal”, in haole terms) is a turtle. You can guess what happened next…!!!YES!!!….During the very moving ceremony, a turtle appeared near us. It stayed and listened. Ron was definitely with us in spirit.  This is what we call a “chicken skin” moment and was accompanied by tears.

Bring it all to Hawaii and charter Kaikiwi at your favourite time of day. Scatter your loved one’s ashes, slowly, into that azure ocean. Celebrate and remember. Talk story.

Sail Blue HI, the highlight of all your Hawaii adventures. Let’s go sailing!

Let’s go Sailing in Hawaii

Sail Blue Hawaii on Oahu provides an unparalleled sailing experience, offering guests the chance to explore the island’s breathtaking coastlines and clear azure blue waters. Whether it’s a romantic sunset cruise, a private sunrise cruise, a tradewind sailing adventure, or a relaxing day-sail, Sail Blue Hawaii’s knowledgeable captain ensures a personalized and memorable journey across Oahu’s stunning seascape. What kind of vessel will we be sailing?

Your safety and comfort are our number one concern: our vessels meet all U.S. Coast Guard inspection requirements.

Kaikiwi is a 42-foot Beneteau 411 and a wonderful sailing machine for Hawaiian waters. She is well proven: Capt. Gaelyn sailed her home from Mexico with two crew and was delighted with the way she handled in all conditions.

Kaikiwi  is offered for day-sailing only (up to 6 passengers). Inter-island/ overnight charters are NOT currently offered. Larger vessels, for 7 + passengers, are also available for all DAY-sailing occasions and custom cruising.

Kaikiwi  has lots of shade so time of day does not affect heat/ sun exposure. Sailing in summer months is very very comfortable even in the middle of the day.

DON’T DREAM YOUR LIFE, LIVE YOUR DREAM

I am surprised by the number of clients who come to me and say “I’ve always dreamed of sailing but never had the chance until now”. Or, “all my life I have wanted to learn how to sail. Thank you Sail Blue HI for introducing me to sailing by offering me a top-notch CUSTOMIZED sailing lesson. Wow. I want more”. A sailing lesson is a beautiful gift to give at birthdays or Christmas. It will be remembered for a life-time as a highlight. Gift certificates are available for any kind of sailing.
