Learn to sail in Hawaii

The Louis Vuitton Cup is at this moment being sailed in Barcelona. Whether you’re an avid Cup follower and know a bit or a lot about sailing, or just interested in sailing lessons to learn the ropes, Sail Blue Hawaii can give you a lesson at your level. By the way, the LVC leads up to the America’s Cup, the most exciting event in yacht racing. Well worth watching at any stage of sailing know-how.

Talking about “learning the ropes”

Choose Sail Blue Hawaii for a genuine sailing lesson aboard your own private yacht. Talking about “learning the ropes,” the first thing you learn in sailing is that they are “lines”, not ropes. A rookie shows who s/he is because their ease (or lack of) with the nautical language will give them away in a heartbeat. And there is nothing wrong with being a rookie…we all start at the beginning. Boating, and especially sailing, does indeed have its own language and it is learned over time by just being around sailors and being onboard. Sit back and listen and you can learn a lot through osmosis. OR, participate, ask questions, and learn with hands-on, and you will soon be talking this language too. What fun!

You can understand from the way these docklines above are tied what kind of boater each is. You can even maybe sum up how they handle their boat and, perhaps, how “bristol” (shipshape) their boat is. Two different styles, indeed! I know whose boat I want to sail on.

Come on over to Sail Blue Hawaii….

…. for some Oahu sailing. If you don’t care for a sailing lesson, GREAT!..just sit back, relax, indulge yourself in a private sailing charter and the gift of “just being out there” and I bet you go home with some of that nautical language in your head, whether you want it there or not. 😉

Sailing In Oahu
Kaikiwi happy at anchor

Kaikiwi sails from Oahu’s south shore. You will embark at Kewalo Basin boat harbor, not far from Waikiki beach hotels. We sail past beautiful coastline in the cobalt blue blue waters of our Pacific. The south shore is the protected side of Oahu: calm and crystal clear, making it the perfect sailing destination.

Why go sailing Oahu?

Common marine wildlife sightings on Oahu are for example, Hawaiian green sea turtles, honu, dolphins, nai’a, and humpback whales, kohola (in winter season only). In addition, flying fish, malolo are some of the critters we may see as we sail about the island.

Incredible sights while sailing

Beautiful breathtaking views of Diamond Head are just one of the highlights while sailing Oahu. On clear days, although far in the distance, Molokai and Lanai can sometimes be seen. This is not destination sailing, destination is sailing!

Those cobalt blue waters we sail in (mentioned above) are remarked about with awe every time we go sailing. It’s just as if someone came along and dropped colouring in the water before we sailed. It is exceptional.

Your Hawaii Whale Watch

This has been a busy week for our humpback visitors as the season winds down for a Hawaii whale watch. I prefer to call it a “whale sail”: we set sail with the hope of seeing these gentle leviathans cruising our waters. February and March are the best for Oahu. The females come to the Lahaina area to have their calf and re-mate before heading back to their Alaska feeding grounds. We have the fortune of seeing mums and calves playing and gaining strength in our Waikiki waters before their 3000 mile trip north.

What time of day should we schedule our whale watch?

Because this is custom sailing, and humpback whales do not have a schedule, we can sail any time of day you want and whatever length of time you wish. Our islands are most consistently graced with trade winds so any time is a good time to go sailing…✨book a SUNRISE cruise, a morning or afternoon day-sail, or our most popular SUNSET cruise ✨ It is all good for a whale sail.

Will we see marine life other than humpback whales?

“Kaikiwi” sails from Oahu’s south (protected) shore, not far from Honolulu, past beautiful coastline in the cobalt blue blue waters of our Pacific.  Wildlife such as green sea turtles, “honu”, dolphins, “nai’a”, humpback whales, “kohola” (in winter season only), and flying fish, “malolo” are some of the critters we may see as we sail. Beautiful views of Oahu, Diamond Head and, on clear days, far in the distance, Molokai and Lanai can sometimes be seen. Please understand this is not “destination” sailing.  “Destination” is sailing.

Gone from my Sight

“I am standing upon the seashore. A ship spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean.

She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says: “There, she is gone!”

“Gone where?”
Gone from my sight. That is all.  She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port. Her diminished size is in me, not in her.

And just at the moment when someone says, “There, she is gone!” there are other eyes watching her approach and other voices ready to take up the glad shout:
“Here she comes!”
And that is dying.

– Henry Van Dyke, a 19th Century clergyman, educator, poet, and religious writer
